Riding the Rails

More than 40 freight and passenger trains travel the tracks through the center of Ashland’s main street each day. On average you can expect to see a train every half hour, including Amtrak trains stopping at the historic station and CSX freight trains destined for the Port of Virginia.

Much of the railroad cargo passing through Ashland is shipped internationally from the intermodal Port of Virginia, as explained in the video below.

The interpretive kiosk at Stop 5 shares stories of railroad passengers and cargo both modern and historic. It highlights the importance of rail travel for the country’s transportation infrastructure and in the culture of Ashland’s community.
