Technological advancements on the railroad brought changes to Ashland and the nation. One of the notable technologies of the 20th Century was the Janney Coupler, one of which is displayed at Stop 7 on England Street.

The interpretive panel at Stop 7 highlights the impact of the Janney Coupler and of several Black railroad inventors. Stop 8 continues the theme by highlighting air brakes, the wheel truck, and mail service provided by the railroad.

Many inventions made necessary improvements to safety for railroad workers. One worker’s account of the many dangers on the job is recreated in this reading.
