Pullman Porters

Ashland has been home to railroad workers since its founding in 1858. Stop 2 highlights how Black railroad workers shaped our local community.

The exhibit was developed in partnership with Hanover County Black Heritage Society. The Society’s other exhibits are located inside The Henry Clay Inn, adjacent to Stop 2, and tours are available by appointment.

The interpretive kiosk for Stop 2 highlights Pullman Porters and the duality of black laborers’ experiences on railroads in the 20th Century. One Pullman Porter’s experience is illustrated in the audio recording below.
